মুচি আর দুই বামনের গল্প
এক দেশে ছিল এক গরিব মুচি। গরিব হলেও মুচি ছিল ভীষণ কর্মঠ আর সৎ। বেচারা যথেষ্ট খাটাখাটনি করেও কিছুতেই নিজের ভাগ্য ফেরাতে পারছিল না। দিন দিন বরং সে গরিব থেকে তস্য গরিবে পরিণত হচ্ছিল। শেষমেশ অবস্হা এতটা করুণ হলো চামড়া কিনে যে জুতো বানাবে সেই পয়সাও মুচির কাছে ছিল না। যেটুকু চামড়া তার কাছে ছিল, সেটা দিয়ে বড়জোর একপাটি জুতো বানানো সম্ভব। কী আর করা! পরদিন সকালে একপায়ের জুতো তৈরি করার ইচ্ছায় সন্ধ্যার দিকে বসে মুচি চামড়া মাপ মতো কাটছাঁট করে রাখলো। তারপর শান্ত মনে ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করে বিছানায় গিয়ে ঘুমিয়ে পড়লো।
পরদিন ভোরে মুচি সকালের প্রার্থনা সেরে, জুতো বানানোর কাজে বসতে গিয়ে দেখে তার টেবিলের উপর নিখুঁতভাবে তৈরি একজোড়া জুতো রাখা আছে। মুচি জুতো জোড়া দেখে বিস্ময়ে হতবাক হয়ে গেল। তার মুখে কোনো কথাই ফুটলো না। জুতোজোড়া হাতে নিয়ে সে খুব খুঁটিয়ে দেখলো। জুতোর সেলাই এত চমৎকার কোত্থাও একবিন্দু খুঁত নেই! মুচি এমন অসাধারণ ভাবে তৈরি জুতো দেখেনি আগে।
কিছু সময়ের মধ্যেই মুচির দোকানে এক ক্রেতা এলেন। জুতোজোড়া তার ভীষণ পছন্দ হলো। বেশ ভালো দামেই ক্রেতাটি জুতোজোড়া কিনে নিয়ে গেলেন। জুতো বিক্রির টাকায় মুচি আরো দুই জোড়া জুতো বানানোর মতো চামড়া কিনে আনলো। সকালে উঠে বানাবে বলে দ্বিগুণ উৎসাহে রাতেই মুচি দুই জোড়া জুতো কেটেছেঁটে রেখে দিলো। চামড়া কেটে রাখার কষ্টটুকু মুচির না করলেও মনে হয় চলতো। কারণ পরদিন সকালেও ঘুম ভেঙে সে তার কাজের টেবিলে দুই জোড়া তৈরি জুতো দেখতে পেলো। তৈরি সে জুতো কেনার জন্য ক্রেতারও যেন তর সইছিল না। অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে দ্বিগুণ দামে দু'জোড়া জুতোই বিক্রি হয়ে গেল। এবার মুচি সে টাকায় চার জোড়া জুতোর জন্য চামড়া কিনে আনলো। পরদিন সকালেও মুচি একই ঘটনা ঘটতে দেখলো। চার জোড়া তৈরি জুতো তার টেবিলে বিক্রির জন্য প্রস্তুত। এই অদ্ভুত ঘটনা দিনের পর দিন চলতে থাকলো। প্রতি সন্ধ্যায় মুচি জুতো তৈরির জন্য মাপ মতো চামড়া কেটেছেঁটে রেখে দেয়, আর সকালে ওঠে টেবিলে তৈরি জুতো পেয়ে যায়। খুব শীঘ্র মুচির গরিবি ঘুচে গিয়ে অবস্হা ফিরতে লাগলো। একসময় মুচিটা বেশ ধনী হয়ে গেল।
এদিকে বড় দিনের আর বেশি দেরি নেই। চারদিকে বড়দিনের উৎসব উপলক্ষে কেনাকাটা, আনন্দের হুল্লোড় শুরু হয়ে গেছে। এরকম এক সন্ধ্যায় জুতোর জন্য চামড়া কাটছাঁট সেরে ঘুমাতে যাওয়ার আগে মুচি তার বউ কে বললো, "আচ্ছা আজ রাতে আমরা যদি না ঘুমিয়ে দেখার চেষ্টা করি, কে বা কারা আমাদের জুতো তৈরিতে সাহায্য করে, কেমন হয় ?" স্বামীর কথা মুচি বউয়ের খুব মনে ধরলো। কে তাদের সাহায্য করে সেটা দেখার কৌতূহলে, একখানা মোমবাতি জ্বেলে রেখে, মুচি আর মুচিবউ হ্যাঙ্গারে ঝুলিয়ে রাখা কাপড়ের আড়ালে গিয়ে ঘাপটি মেরে বসে থাকলো। সময় পেরিয়ে যখন মধ্যরাত, তখন মুচি আর তার বউ দেখতে পেলো, দুজন ক্ষুদে আকারের দেবদূত কোত্থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে মুচির জুতো বানানোর টেবিলে বসে কেটে রাখা জুতো সেলাই করতে ব্যস্ত হয়ে পড়েছে। বামন দুজন একদম ন্যাংটা পুঁটো।একটা সুতো পর্যন্ত নেই তাদের শরীরে। তারা তাদের ছোট্ট ছোট্ট হাতের আঙুল ঘুরিয়ে ঘুরিয়ে জুতো সেলাই, হাতুড়ি দিয়ে পেরেক ঠোকা ইত্যাদি এত দ্রুত করছিল, যা দেখে মুচির চোখ ছানাবড়া হবার দশা! চোখের পলক না ফেলে, তাজ্জব হয়ে মুচি আর মুচিবউ লুকিয়ে বামন দুটোর কাজ দেখতে লাগলো। বমন দুটো এক মনে জুতো সেলাইয়ে কাজ করেটরে টেবিলের উপর তৈরি জুতো গুলো সাজিয়ে রেখে, যেমন ভোজবাজির মতো উপস্হিত হয়েছিল, তেমনি দ্রুত উবে গেল।
পরদিন সকালে মুচিবউ তার স্বামীকে বললো, "ক্ষুদে বামন দুটোর জন্য আমাদের অবস্হা ফিরেছে, আমাদের অবশ্যই এজন্য তাদের কৃতজ্ঞতা জানানো উচিত। হুটোপাটি করে তারা চলে গেল। খেয়াল করেছো তাদের পরনে কোনো কাপড় নেই। ঠাণ্ডায় বেচারারা না জানি কত কষ্ট পায়। ওদের জন্য কী করবো সেটা বলছি শোনো। আমি ওদের জন্য ছোটো ছোটো দুজোড়া জামা,প্যান্ট, কোট, আর দু'জোড়া হাত মোজা, পা মোজা তৈরি করে দেবো। আর তুমি দুজনের জন্য দু'জোড়া জুতো তৈরি করে দেবে।" মুচি খুশি মনে বললো, "ওদের জন্য কিছু করতে পারলে আমারও খুব আনন্দ হবে।"
সবকিছু তৈরি হয়ে যাবার পর, একরাতে মুচি আর তার বউ উপহারগুলো টেবিলের উপর সুন্দর করে সাজিয়ে রাখলো। সেদিন মুচি আর জুতো তৈরির জন্য কোনো চামড়া কেটে রাখলো না। তাদের উপহার পেয়ে বামন দুজন কি করে সেটা দেখার জন্য মুচি আর মুচিবউ আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকলো। ঠিক মাঝ রাতের দিকে বামন দুজন উপস্হিত হলো। এসেই তারা জুতো তৈরির জন্য কেটে রাখা চামড়ার খোঁজ করে পেলো না। তার বদলে দেখতে পেলো টেবিলের উপর সাজানো রয়েছে চমৎকার ছোট ছোট জামা, প্যান্ট, জুতো এসব। জিনিসগুলো দেখে প্রথমে বামন দুজন অবাক হলো। তারপর যখন বুঝলো উপহারগুলো তাদের জন্যই রাখা হয়েছে, তখন আনন্দে হাত পা ছুঁড়ে নেচে নিলো একপাক।
উপহারগুলো তাদের এতই পছন্দ হয়েছে যে চোখের পলকে তারা সেগুলো পরা শুরু করলো। পরতে পরতে মনের আনন্দে বামন দুজন গান জুড়লো-
কাপড় জামায় লাগছে মোদের লক্ষীমন্ত ছেলে
মুচির কাজ করবো না আর এসব কিছু ফেলে!
চেয়ার টপকে, বেঞ্চ ডিঙ্গিয়ে তারা গাইতে গাইতে আর নাচতে নাচতে দরজা পেরিয়ে বেরিয়ে গেল। এরপর বামন দুজনকে মুচি তার বউ, আর কখনও দেখতে পেলো না। জুতো তৈরির জন্য বামন দুজন আর না এলেও মুচি কিন্তু নিজের কাজে এক বিন্দু ফাঁকি দিলো না। সে তার কাজ মন দিয়ে করে যেতে লাগলো। যে কারণে তার অবস্হার আরো উন্নতি হলো। বাকি জীবনটা মুচি আর মুচিবউ খুব সুখে শান্তিতে কাটালো।

Nothing came out of his mouth. He took the pair of shoes in his hand and examined them very carefully. The shoe stitching was so exquisite, there was not a single flaw! In no time, a buyer came to the cobbler's shop. He liked the pair of shoes very much. The buyer bought the pair of shoes at a very good price. With the money he had earned from selling the shoes, the cobbler bought two more pairs of shoes with leather. With double enthusiasm, he cut two pairs of shoes at night and left them. Even if the cobbler had not gone to the trouble of cutting the leather, it seemed that it would have worked. Because the next morning, when he woke up, he found two pairs of shoes ready on his work table. The buyer also seemed to be in no mood to buy the shoes. In a short time, the two pairs of shoes were sold at double the price. This time, the cobbler bought leather for four pairs of shoes with that money. The next morning, the cobbler saw the same thing happen. Four pairs of shoes were ready for sale on his table. This strange thing continued day after day. Every evening, the cobbler would cut out pieces of leather to make shoes, and in the morning, he would find ready-made shoes on the table. Soon, the cobbler's poverty began to disappear and his fortunes began to improve. Eventually, the cobbler became quite wealthy.
Meanwhile, Christmas was not far away. Shopping and festivities for the Christmas festival had begun all around. One such evening, before going to bed after cutting out the leather for the shoes, the cobbler said to his wife, "Well, what if we don't sleep tonight and see who helps us make our shoes?" The cobbler's wife took her husband's words to heart. Curious to see who would help them, the cobbler and the cobbler's wife lit a candle and sat down behind the clothes hanging on the hanger. When midnight came, the cobbler and his wife saw two tiny angels come out of nowhere and sit at the cobbler's shoemaking table, busy sewing the shoes they had cut. The two dwarfs were completely naked. They did not even have a thread on their bodies. They were sewing the shoes with their tiny fingers, hammering nails, etc. so quickly that the cobbler's eyes widened! Without blinking, the cobbler and his wife, amazed, began to watch the two dwarfs secretly. The two dwarfs worked tirelessly sewing the shoes and arranged the shoes on the table, and they quickly disappeared.
The next morning, the cobbler's wife said to her husband, "We have recovered from the loss of the two little dwarfs. We must thank them for this. They left in a hurry. You have noticed that they have no clothes on. The poor things suffer so much in the cold. Listen to what I will do for them. I will make two small pairs of shirts, pants, coats, and two pairs of gloves and socks for them. And you will make two pairs of shoes for both of them." The cobbler said happily, "I will be very happy if I can do something for them."
After everything was ready, one night the cobbler and his wife arranged the gifts beautifully on the table. That day the cobbler did not cut any leather for making shoes. The cobbler and the cobbler's wife hid behind the table to see what the two dwarfs would do with their gifts. The two dwarfs arrived just around midnight. When they arrived, they could not find the leather they had cut for making shoes. Instead, they saw beautiful little dresses, pants, shoes, etc. arranged on the table. At first, the two dwarfs were surprised to see the things. Then, when they realized that the gifts were kept for them, they jumped up and down with joy.
They liked the gifts so much that they started wearing them in the blink of an eye. As they wore them, the two dwarfs sang in joy -
My Lakshmanta son is wearing clothes
I will not do the cobbler's job anymore!
They jumped over chairs and benches and went out through the door, singing and dancing. After that, the cobbler and his wife never saw the two dwarfs again. Even though the two dwarfs did not come to make shoes, the cobbler did not miss a single moment of his work. He started doing his work with all his heart. Because of this, his condition improved even more. The cobbler and the cobbler's wife spent the rest of their lives very happily.
