উইল
অনেক অনেক দিন আগেকার কথা । এক ভদ্রলোক তিনটি মেয়ে রেখে মারা গেছিলেন। ভদ্রলোকের তিনটি মেয়ে তিন রকমের ছিল। একটি খুব সুন্দরী আর বিলাসিনী, আর একটি ছিল মিতব্যয়ী আর কঠোর পরিশ্রমী । ক্ষেত খামার নিয়েই সে মাথা ঘামায় তাছাড়া ভাল সুতোও কাটে । তৃতীয় মেয়েটি ছিল বিকলাঙ্গ এবং কুরূপা।
ভদ্রলোক মারা যাবার আগে একটা উইল করে গেছিলেন। সে উইলে তিনি সমান ভাগে ভাগ করে দিতে বলে গেলেন। কিন্তু উইলে একটা শর্ত ছিল। যে ধনসম্পদ তারা পাবে তা কিন্তু তারা কেউই ভোগ করতে পারবে না। শুধু তাইই নয় ভোগ না করলে আবার প্রত্যেককেই এক হাজার পাউণ্ড করে দিতে হবে তাদের মাকে।
এই অদ্ভুত উইনের খবর সারা এথেন্সে ছড়িয়ে পড়ল । ভদ্রলোকের স্ত্রী ছুটলেন বড় বড় আইনজীবীদের কাছে উইলের রহস্য উদ্ঘাটন করতে । তারা অনেক মাথা ঘামিয়েও বের করতে পারলেন না যে এ কি করে সম্ভব? মেয়েরা সম্পত্তির যে ভাগ পাবে, তা তারা ভোগ করতে পারবে না! অথচ আবার এই না ভোগ করতে পারার জন্যে এক হাজার পাউন্ড দিতে হবে । আর এই অর্থই বা তাদের তখন আসবে কোথাথেকে?
বহুদিন ধরে বহু চেষ্টা করেও যখন এ ব্যাপারের কোনো কূল কিনারা মিললো না তখন ভদ্রলোকের বিধবা স্ত্রী আইনের ধার না ধেরে নিজের বিবেক বুদ্ধি মত সম্পত্তির বিলি ব্যবস্থা তিনি নিজেই ঠিক করলেন। তিনি ঠিক করলেন সুন্দরী বিলাসিনী মেয়েটাকে ভাল পোশাক আশাক, গয়নাপত্র, সৌখিন জিনিস যা আছে সে সবই দেবেন, তার সঙ্গে দেবেন বান্দা, আর বাদী । খাটিয়ে মেয়েটাকে দেবেন তিনি ক্ষেত-খামার, গোলাবাড়ি, পশুপাল, আর চাষ-বাসের জন্যে যা কিছু লাগে, _ কলি-কামিন-মজুর ইত্যাদি । আর বিকলাঙ্গ মেয়েটাকে দেবেন তিনি থাকবার জন্যে একটা সুন্দর বাড়ি। তার সঙ্গে লাগোয়া চমৎকার একটা বাগান। আর দেবেন বড়সড় একটা ভাড়ার ঘর যেখানে ভাল ভাল খাবার জিনিস আর মদ সাজানো থাকবে।
এইরকম ভাবে সবকিছু ঠিকঠাক করে একদিন বিধবা স্ত্রী লোকজন ডেকে তাদের সামনে তিন মেয়েকে যখন এইসব দিতে যাচ্ছেন আর লোকজনও সব তার বাটোয়ারার তারিফ করছে তখন কোথেকে খবর পেয়ে সেখানে হঠাৎ ঈশপ হাজির হল। তিনি সবকিছু শুনে বললেন-এই মেয়ে তিনটির বাবা যদি জানতেন যে এথেন্সের লোকগুলির মাথায় এমনই গোবর পোরা যে তারা কেউই তার উইল-এর মর্ম উদ্ঘাটন করতে পারবে না, তাহলে তিনি বিরক্ত হয়ে তার কবরের ভিতরেই পাশ ফিরতেন।
ঈশপের এই কথা শুনে সকলেই তখন তাকে ধরে বসল, তাহ'লে আপনিই বনুন, কি করে এই উইলের সমস্যার সমাধান হয়।
ঈশপ তখন বললেন-শুনুন কি করে এর সমাধান হয় । আসবাবপত্র সমেত ভাড়ার ঘর ইত্যাদি এ খাটিয়ে মেয়েটাকে দেওয়া হোক্। ভাল জামাকাপড় মণিমুক্তো, বিলাস দ্রব্য আর বান্দা বাদি দেওয়া হোক এঁ বিকলাঙ্গটিকে, আর চাষের জমি-জমা যন্ত্রপাতি, পশুর পাল, রাখাল, মজুর ইত্যাদি দেওয়া হোক সুন্দরী বিলাসিনী মেয়েকে । এই ব্যবস্থা হলে কেউই তার নিজের নিজের সম্পত্তি রাখতে চাইবে না। ব্যবহারও করতে চাইবে না । বিকলাঙ্গ সৌখিন জিনিস বিক্রি করে মদ কিন্তে চাইবে । খাটিয়ে চাষী মেয়েটি সুন্দর সাজানো বাড়ি, বাগান দিয়ে কি করবে? চাই তার চাষের জমি, চাষের সরঞ্জাম আর মজুর । বিলাসিনীর জমি-জমা চাষের সরঞ্জামের কোনো প্রয়োজন নেই। প্রয়োজন কেবল তার ভাল ভাল সাজগোজ । সুতরাং তাদের বাবার ইচ্ছেমত সম্পত্তির ভাগ পেয়ে তারা তা ভোগ করতে পারল না। বিক্রি করে দিল এবং বিক্রির ফলে তাদের বাবার নির্দেশ মত তাদের মাকে প্রত্যেকেই এক হাজার পাউন্ড করে দিল।
উপদেশ - অল্প মেধার অসংখ্য লোক যে সমস্যার সমাধান খুঁজে পায় না, একজন বিচক্ষণ, বিজ্ঞ লোক অতি সহজেই তার রহস্য ভেদ করতে পারেন ।
Long, long ago. A gentleman died leaving behind three daughters. The gentleman's three daughters were of three kinds. One was very beautiful and luxurious, and the other was frugal and hardworking. The news of this strange will spread throughout Athens. The gentleman's wife ran to the big lawyers to unravel the mystery of the will. They could not figure out how this was possible? The daughters would not be able to enjoy the share of the property that they would get! And yet, they had to pay one thousand pounds to not be able to enjoy it. And where will they get this money from?
After many attempts, when no solution could be found for this matter, the widow of the gentleman decided to distribute the property according to her own conscience and wisdom, without relying on the law. She decided to give the beautiful and luxurious girl good clothes, jewelry, and all the fancy things she had, along with servants and a maid. She would give the girl a farm, a barn, livestock, and everything needed for farming and living, _ a plough, a ploughman, a labourer, etc. And she would give the disabled girl a beautiful house to live in. A beautiful garden adjacent to it. And she would give her a large rented house where good food and wine would be arranged.
After arranging everything in this way, one day the widow called people and when they were going to give these things to the three girls in front of them and the people were praising her distribution, Aesop suddenly appeared there, having received news from somewhere. He heard everything and said - If the father of these three girls knew that the people of Athens were so stupid that none of them would be able to decipher the meaning of his will, he would have turned around in his grave and been annoyed.
Hearing this from Aesop, everyone sat down and said, "Then you tell me how to solve this will problem."
Aesop then said - Listen to how it is solved. A rented house with furniture, etc. should be given to the girl who is working. Good clothes, jewels, luxury goods and servants should be given to the disabled person, and the agricultural land, equipment, livestock, shepherds, laborers etc. should be given to the beautiful and luxurious girl. If this arrangement is made, no one will want to keep their own property. They will not want to use it either. The disabled person will sell his hobbies and ask for wine. What will the girl who is working do with her beautifully decorated house and garden? I want her land, farming tools and laborers. A wealthy woman does not need land or farming tools. She only needs to be well-groomed. So they could not enjoy their share of the property as their father wished. They sold it and as a result of the sale, they gave their mother one thousand pounds each, as their father had instructed.
Advice - A wise and intelligent person can easily solve a problem that many people of little intelligence cannot solve.
